Education & Science
The science we are talking about here is not 'Better living through Chemistry' that was sold to us during the 20th century. We are talking about building material science and how materials interact with the environment differently due to how they are produced. The study of this interaction is not new, but dramatic breakthroughs in scientific understanding have come to light in the 21st century.
The following papers present a brief overview of recent discoveries:
The first paper discusses simple experiments that shed light on our understanding of building materials and the interactions taking place. These experiments can be performed in a high tech lab or in an elementary science class.
The second paper builds on the first, and demonstrates that interior clay plasters and exterior Lime stuccos help to control humidity and temperature inside a building envelope. Ironically, modern building material scientists had searched for decades, unsuccessfully, for such material, and all along it was hiding out in a traditional building material: the clay in adobes and earthen plasters.
Tim White will be speaking at the San Luis Valley Energy Fair August 29th - 30th, 2009. Please visit www.slvenergyfair.com for more information.
Sustainable Education Development
TBMS Founder Tim White designs and teaches intensive classes on natural building for homeowners, contractors, and other building professionals. In addition to hands-on learning, these classes focus on the core ideas that students must understand in order to work effectively with their materials.
Additional classes and public speaking events are offered to teach design professionals effective and appropriate use of natural building materials.
Below is a list of sustainable natural building classes Traditional Building Models and Systems LLC offers or can help you develop.
- Site based earth plasters
- American Clay Earth plasters
- Traditional Lime stucco
- Straw Bale construction
- Adobe making and Stacking
- Straw Clay infill
- Earthen Floors
- Design Considerations for Natural Materials
- Design Considerations for Integrating Natural Materials in Conventional Structures

Improper material mixing
* This photo gallery shows failures when conventional materials are mixed with traditional materials and when designs do not take into account the limits of traditional building materials. All of these problems can be avoided. Traditional Building Models and Systems LLC provides project consulting so you avoid these failures and potential liability on your project.
